The CH season is over. The Habs players will meet the media in the next few minutes, and then it’s off to the next training camp.

While the players keep fit this summer, management will have a good challenge on its hands.

And what’s that? To build a team better equipped to face the Capitals of this world in the 2026 playoffs. Because yes, next year, the club won’t just want to be #InTheMix…

You know as well as I do that a few players are at the end of their contracts. Michael Pezzetta will be leaving (I don’t see him signing here again, at least) and David Savard will be retiring.

But what about the others?

Because of his new contract, Jake Evans isn’t going anywhere. But the same can’t necessarily be said for Joel Armia and Christian Dvorak, who will be free agents on July 1 if nothing changes.

Savard… Armia… Dvorak… that’s a lot of leadership to lose.

Is it impossible to think that Armia and/or Dvorak might stay? It’s safe to assume that Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton will talk to both guys’ agents, but won’t want to keep them at all costs.

And on that subject, Elliotte Friedman addressed Dvo’s case in his podcast(32 Thoughts) and had this to say:

We suspect he might be, but his play at the end of the season and in the playoffs has made fans increasingly reluctant to see the third trio broken up.

Could Dvorak accept a bargain contract to stay in town with his friends? After all, Hughes isn’t going to overpay to keep him.

Even though he’s been unloved for years, Dvorak brings leadership and stabilizes the Habs’ center line. He takes on important defensive assignments for his coach.

With the CH already having to find a second center this summer, losing Dvorak would inevitably hurt the club. But giving him too much money would hurt too, that said.

Unless you think Alex Newhook can take Dvorak’s chair? Because it’s not Kirby Dach, Owen Beck or Michael Hage, in 2025-2026, who will replace Dvo.
