6 million dollars over two years offered to Marchand: a huge lack of respect from the Bruins

Once again this year, the National Hockey League trade deadline has pulled a rabbit out of its hat in the last minutes before the complete closure of the transaction market.

Last year, we had a huge surprise at the last second, as Tomas Hertl took the path of the Vegas Golden Knights, a major divisional rival of the San Jose Sharks.

Well, this year, it’s Brad Marchand who was traded at the very end of the deadline, as he too was sent to a divisional rival, going from the Boston Bruins to the Florida Panthers.

This is a transaction that took everyone by surprise, as despite rumors that the Bruins’ captain might leave Boston, time was running out, and we no longer believed it.

In short, Marchand is now a member of the Florida Panthers, and this is for a conditional second-round pick in 2027, which could become a first-round pick (2027 or 2028) if the Panthers win two rounds in the playoffs this season and Marchand plays in at least 50% of the games.

Essentially, the Bruins will not have gotten much for their captain, but they will have preferred to get something rather than lose him on the free agent market this summer.

Because yes, Marchand would have surely tested the market, especially considering the disrespectful offer the Bruins made to him before trading him, namely $3 million per year for two seasons.

That is crazy disrespect. https://t.co/SVT9D7VSWZ

In fact, the Bruins’ offer to re-sign their 36-year-old captain was $6 million for two years.

Honestly, it’s a big lack of respect towards the Bruins’ number 63, who has given his body and soul to this team for 16 years.

It’s even more disrespectful on the part of the Bruins, considering that Marchand has been underpaid for eight years with his contract worth $6,125,000 per year, which he signed in September 2016.

The Bruins could have very well decided to reward and thank Marchand for everything he has done for the team by offering him a lot of money for one or two seasons before he retires with the Bruins like Patrice Bergeron.

In short, Boston will have preferred to get something in return for their captain before it’s too late, and this return will have come from a divisional rival who now counts on three pests in attack in their team with Sam Bennett and Matthew Tkachuk.

It will be really painful for the Panthers’ opponents in the playoffs, and after that, it will be interesting to see what Marchand will do.

Will he decide to stay in Florida, or will he choose to test the market?

Marchand had surely a preference for Florida for a potential trade, and therefore, he could decide to stay there.

All of this remains to be seen.

– Waddell is proud of his team.
“This group has done a great job. They deserve to keep going forward.”
For Don Waddell, today was about keeping his team together and adding where he could, and the #CBJ GM got it done. https://t.co/uWsPQqq8jc
