The Canadiens tried everything, but the Lightning were simply too strong

After losing to the NHL’s worst team, the Canadiens were back in action tonight against the team of the hour, the Edmonton Oilers.

This was Samuel Montembeault’s second game in a row.

The Habs started the game strong.

They were awarded a power play in the opening moments and Cole Caufield took advantage of it to score.

He and Slafkosvky got another scoring chance later, but Stuart Skinner shut the door.

After 20 minutes of play, it was 1-0 Montreal.

In the second period, no goals were scored, but Montembeault shone.

He made a fine save on Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.

As for Mike Matheson, he showed off his defensive skills.

Early in the third period, the Oilers came out with the knife between their teeth.

Leon Draisaitl scored a controversial goal.

After review, the goal was not disallowed.

Fans went through a whole range of emotions.

The rest of the third period was the story of the goalies, who stopped everything.

Off to overtime.

In the very first moments of the extra period, Mike Matheson took a very bad penalty.

The result: Evan Bouchard took advantage to give the Oilers their tenth consecutive victory.

Final score: 2-1.

Despite the loss, the Habs goalie stopped 40 shots.

The Habs return to action on Monday against Jonathan Drouin and the Avalanche at the Bell Centre.
