Flyers and Devils interested in Cayden Primeau

Pierre LeBrun has just assured us: the three-goal rotation won’t last all season in Montreal.

Kent Hughes is keen to keep Cayden Primeau (and put him on display) up top for fear of losing him to the waivers. And this precaution is justified, as at least two teams are expressing serious interest in him should he ever go through this stage.

LeBrun mentions the Flyers and Devils.

New Jersey has already shown an interest in the goalkeeper, albeit back in June 2022.

In New Jersey, the club has high expectations, but the goalkeepers don’t necessarily get the job done.

Vitek Vanecek and Akira Schmid have efficiency percentages above 3.44 and goals-against averages below .888.

But is acquiring Primeau really the answer? Not necessarily. But by acquiring him (preferably for nothing), New Jersey would have a nice insurance policy. After all, Schmid can go and regain his confidence in the AHL (without having to go through the waivers).

And Primeau is off to a good start. In two games, he hasn’t lost face, as his stats prove.

As for the Flyers, Carter Hart isn’t untouchable, even though he’s off to a good start, and the club’s number-two goalie, Samuel Ersson, has as much NHL experience as the Canadiens’ protégé. LeBrun only named these two teams, but I’m sure a few other clubs would also be interested in acquiring the 24-year-old goaltender.

A few days ago, the San Jose Sharks were linked to the goalie. And let’s just say their priority in the waivers is good…

In short, Hughes has every interest in keeping his goalie in the NHL. But he’ll have to find a solution to put an end to this damn three-goalie rotation once and for all.
