EIHL: former Penguins player hit in the neck by a skate
A horrible scene has just occurred in the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL), which is a professional ice hockey championship in the UK.

In a match between the Nottingham Panthers and the Sheffield Steelers, former NHL player Adam Johnson was hit in the neck by a skate. Obviously, his match was over and the scene was appalling.

The 8,000 or so fans even had to leave the amphitheatre for obvious reasons.

Johnson played 13 NHL games with the Pittsburgh Penguins, collecting one goal and three assists in the process. He has never been recognized as an NHL player, having spent the majority of his professional career in North America in the AHL.

In 2023-2024, he made the jump from DEL, a German league, to the English league. In seven games, he collected seven points.

It’s reminiscent of the injury to Sabres goalkeeper Clint Malarchuk, who was saved in extremis several years ago.

For less sensitive souls, we’re unable to find images of Johnson’s injury, but perhaps that’s for the best.

Fans on the scene confessed that it was one of the most horrific scenes they’d seen in their lives .

The 29-year-old, who is currently between life and death, required cardiopulmonary resuscitation and was quickly rushed to hospital. Obviously, the other players returned to the locker room and the rest of the match was called off. The Steelers were leading 2-1.

What’s important now: Adam Johnson’s health. Let’s hope the forward recovers from this nasty injury and, above all, stays alive. Our thoughts are with him tonight.
