The Golden Knights had one mission when they arrived at American Airlines Center: to close the books on the Western Final. With a 3-0 lead and the absence of Jamie Benn and Evgeni Dadonov, everything was in place for Bruce Cassidy’s men.

Unfortunately, Mavrik Bourque won’t have the chance to play an NHL game tonight, despite the fact that he took reps with one of the power play units this morning.

The first period didn’t start well for the Stars, who had no answer to Vegas’ attacks. William Karlsson opened the scoring with a beautiful deflection.

The Stars’ big guns had to respond, and that’s exactly what they did as they made their presence known in opposing territory. On the power play, Nick Robertson scored a superb baseball-style goal as he hit the puck twice in the air.

The rest of the first period was all about the two goalies, but especially Oettinger, who stood up to the Knights’ attacks.

The Stars got off to a good start in the second period, with several good scoring chances. However, it was the Golden Knights who were more opportunistic. Jonathan Marchessault took advantage of a fine play by Jack Eichel to give the visitors the lead.

However, Nick Robertson brought both teams back to square one with another extremely important goal.

For most of the third period, both teams traded good scoring chances as the game came alive. Both Hill and Oettinger were solid for their teams. In particular, Jack Eichel had quite a period, as he multiplied his scoring chances.

The game was settled in overtime, with the Stars winning on a Joe Pavelski cannonball.
