Pierre Dorion takes aim at NHL’s European players

Yikes. Let’s just say that next time, maybe Pierre Dorion will think twice before admitting such a thing.

On “The Cam & Strick Podcast”, the Sens GM took a swipe at the NHL’s European players, saying without too much concern that Tim Stutzle “has character for a European”.

He shouldn’t have said that out loud.

This has been a popular stereotype in the NHL for several years now. Fans, pundits and anyone who watches field hockey have often criticized the effort and attitude of certain European players at times.

But Pierre Dorion is an NHL general manager. I’m not sure that his comments will be much appreciated around the league… And I can’t believe it looks good in view of the opening of the free-agent market on July 1.

Why would a player from Europe want to commit to a team knowing that the general manager of that team is saying things like that? Above all, it could affect the confidence of the players in question.

You see where I’m going with this.

There’s another segment from his podcast appearance that interested me. Dorion confided that the team’s veterans were angry with him because the dress code was too strict.

Claude Giroux, among others, was part of the group…

And with so much complaining, management decided to change the rules a bit. Towards the end of the season, the dress code was more “relaxed”, and Giroux even said the team would make the playoffs next year if players weren’t “forced” to wear ties to games.
