Interesting insights from a player who has never played in the NHL and is making his way in European leagues.@HcLugano1941https://t.co/YNk11P2vxZ

I like the “Hockey Night in Montreal” account on Twitter.
It shows trade proposals for the Montreal Canadiens and it always makes me react. Sometimes they’re realistic, sometimes they seem a bit far-fetched…
Yesterday’s idea is (another) good example. I’ll let you have a look at the following tweet before continuing.
To Habs: Thatcher Demko, 2024 3rd
To Van: Sam Montembeault, 2025 1st (CGY), 2024 2nd, 2025 2nd

Basically, it’s pretty simple. The deal would send Thatcher Demko and a 3rd-round pick to Montreal… While Samuel Montembeault would head to Vancouver with a 1st-round pick in 2025 (the Flames’) and two 2nd-round picks (one in 2024 and the other in 2025).
I can’t seem to make up my mind.
Certainly, on paper, the idea makes sense for the CH if the club were to get their hands on a top-notch goaltender. In my eyes, Demko is one of the NHL’s (very) good goalies, and he’s only 27.
His stats may not be exactly stellar, but Demko plays in Vancouver, and the Canucks have been struggling defensively for some time now. They simply lack structure on the ice, and that’s what sank the team last year.
But on the other hand, I think it’s a high price to pay… Especially because we haven’t yet seen Montembeault at his full potential. He had a great campaign last year with the CH, and showed some particularly interesting signs of progress.
Not for nothing did Kent Hughes state out loud that the Quebecer “wasn’t going anywhere” back in January, just a few weeks before the trade deadline. The GM believes in him, so Montembeault could sign a contract extension before too long.
Also, we don’t really know what to expect from the Flames next year. The current uncertainty in Calgary regarding the futures of Noah Hanifin, Mikael Backlund and Elias Lindholm could hurt the team on the ice in the next few years, and if they miss the playoffs in 2024-2025…
What if the CH acquired Demko… Montembeault exploded in Vancouver and the Canucks drafted in the top-10 in 2025 with the Flames’ pick? We’d be hearing about it for a long time, let’s put it that way.
Hehe. Remember, this isn’t a rumor… It’s a proposal.
