Jonathan Toews: a year off to return in 2024?

It’s now official.

Jonathan Toews posted a message on his Instagram account saying he was leaving the Chicago Blackhawks organization.

He made a point of thanking the club, the city and the fans who have supported him since he was drafted in 2006, and we know how much he’s appreciated in the Windy City. After all, he’s worn the “C” on his jersey for so long that he’s seen as a Blackhawks legend.

It makes sense. Especially with the three Stanley Cups he’s won in a team uniform.

But Jay Zawaski, who has a podcast in Chicago and is plugged into the sports world, sees it as Toews skipping the 23-24 season in order to come back strong next year.

According to his information, the former Hawks captain didn’t post the message in question in order to retire:

Jonathan Toews celebrated his 35th birthday in April. The last few seasons haven’t been super easy health-wise, and one wonders if that’s what might prompt him to take a little break.

If he wants to return to the NHL and feels ready to give more to any club, he has time to prepare for the 2024-2025 season.

Maybe that’s the right thing to do if he’s feeling magical right now. Toews is (and always has been) a fierce competitor on the ice, and maybe he wants to finish things off the right way.

Guys like that, having control over the decision to hang up their skates. They don’t want injuries or anything else to force them into retirement, and that’s understandable.

It’s something to keep an eye on over the coming months.

Because even if he’s no longer the dominant player he once was, Jonathan Toews has the tools to help a club on the ice in a more minimal role. His experience and defensive qualities make (or will make) him an interesting candidate for a club aspiring to the big time, and if he does decide to return to the game next year, there will be plenty of interest in his services.
