Tyler Toffoli’s turn to talk about Darryl Sutter

I don’t need to tell you, but Darryl Sutter is a unique trainer.

Many believe his mentality is too backward, and with good reason.

Many of his former players disliked the coach for various reasons.

Jonathan Huberdeau openly rejoiced at his departure, while Nazem Kadri claimed to have been restricted offensively by Sutter.

And let’s not forget theJakob Pelletier story, which caused quite a stir.

Now it’s Tyler Toffoli’s turn to comment on the stern coach.

The former Montreal Canadiens player appeared on the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast, hosted by Paul Bissonnette, Ryan Whitney and Brian McGonagle.

Toffoli didn’t throw arrows at Sutter, as some of his teammates have done since his dismissal.

Instead, the maverick told wacky stories that define Darryl Sutter.

Sutter was fond of “pecking” his players with such remarks.

“In Calgary we don’t have a training complex, so we had to go to Winsport when the Saddledome wasn’t available. If we had a bad game, he’d say something like, ‘I guess we’ll go to Winsport tomorrow’. Sometimes it was like 0-0, we’d have 15 shots and they’d have 3 and he’d tell us the same thing.” – Tyler Toffoli

Pretty special comment. I guess he wanted to push his players to perform with that kind of comment.

But it goes even further, according to Toffoli.

“It could be 0-0 and he’d ask Vladdy, [Dan] Vladar, to be ready. We’d look at the score it was 0-0 and he’d say Marky [Jacob Markström] wasn’t ready for tonight.” – Tyler Toffoli

Imagine Claude Julien telling the backup goalie to get ready because Carey Price wasn’t ready for the game, when it was 0-0 in the first period.

Sutter is truly one of a kind.

It’s good to hear from one of his former players who doesn’t openly throw arrows at him, and who tells funny stories while he was his player.
