I don't know about you, but if you'd told me that Garrett Crochet was going to miss most of the season, I don't think I would have believed the Boston rotation would have a good season.
Imagine if he can come back (in a relief role, mind you) late in the season: the Red Sox will have options on the mound.
A long catch-up with Garrett Crochet today included talk about his progress, changes to his contract, and an acknowledgment that a return this year would “a million percent” be in a relief role. “What
could I build up to, max? Probably two innings.”https://t.co/phPT9m9rQf

If the team has stayed in shape, it's largely thanks to Sonny Gray, who's going to get Cy Young votes at the end of the season.
But it's also thanks to the young players.
Connelly Early (before he got injured and was traded to the Nationals), Jake Bennett, and Payton Tolle are three reasons behind the Red Sox' current record.
I know it hasn't always been pretty this season, but still.
After seeing Tolle get his feet wet in the MLB in 2025 (he even pitched a bit in the playoffs), the team wanted to see him break out this year.
And that's exactly what happened. His 3.08 ERA over 120 innings is truly excellent.
Naturally, the question arises: Will the pitcher eventually earn a contract extension in Boston?
Tolle himself has said he hasn't been approached, but that he wants to stay as long as the team wants him in Boston.
Payton Tolle says the Red Sox have not yet approached him about a contract extension, but he would “for sure” be open to those discussions.
“We're calling Boston home right now for however long they want me to call it home.”

He saw Early get traded. Even though players signed to long-term deals can still be traded (Rafael Devers is a good example), a big contract brings more stability, so to speak.
I'm not surprised this isn't being discussed right now because the season is in full swing. But this winter, will Craig Breslow take care of it?
We all agree that Boston has time (until 2032), but thinking about it now could help resolve a major issue.
Several players have recently received their big contracts in Boston. Will he be next?
