March 6 was the trade deadline. The Canadiens didn't make a move to acquire a skater, nor did they make a move to acquire a goaltender.
There were rumors circulating about Jordan Binnington, in particular.
That night, Samuel Montembeault faced the Ducks and didn't play well. The Habs lost 6-5 in a shootout, marking Monty's second loss in as many games following the Olympics. The Habs had also lost 4-3 in overtime to the Islanders on February 26.
At the time, we didn't know it, but Monty had just played his last game before… we don't know when yet.
Jakub Dobes subsequently played Saturday's game against the Kings as well as Tuesday's matchup against the Maple Leafs. And after those two wins, Jacob Fowler was recalled for the second game of a back-to-back. He went on to win a big game in Ottawa.
Not only has Monty not been dressed for a game since then, but the Rocket even acquired a goalie to replace Fowler in Laval. The message was clear.
And since then, the Canadiens' two young goalies have been performing well. Here are the stats for the two young netminders.
Update after tonight's game…
Dobes 7-2-0 / 1.78 / .942
Fowler 4-1-0 / 2.41 / .909The Canadiens haven't changed their style of play since March 6, but both goalies are making the saves and that's making all the difference #Habs #Goalies #NHL https://t.co/X1otGWHy77

It's a shame from a human perspective for the Quebec goalie—everyone agrees on that. But in terms of hockey, things are going pretty well for the Habs.
Since March 7, only one NHL team has at least ten wins: the Canadiens, who have eleven. Dobes has just two losses in nine games, and Fowler has only one in five starts.
Just yesterday, the American goaltender found a way to win. Yes, he gave up two goals to the Rangers that allowed the home team to tie the game, and yes, he's lucky to have Cole Caufield on his side.
But he found a way to win his fourth game in five since his second recall. And until proven otherwise, it's by racking up the Ws that a team can hope to make the playoffs.
What a save from Jacob Fowler

The Canadiens' current duo is young and inexperienced. But right now, it's clear that the guys are getting the job done, and that's making a difference in the standings.
The Canadiens aren't guaranteed a playoff spot mathematically speaking, but…

overtime
The Canadiens will practice at 1 p.m. at the Devils' arena. Tomorrow evening, the Habs will wrap up their five-game road trip by trying to beat the New Jersey Devils on the road.
Remember that on Sunday night, it's the Devils who will try to defeat the Habs at the Montreal Arena.
