The Predators and the Leafs find themselves in a similar situation.
Both clubs are looking for a new GM ahead of next season and are currently in talks with candidates.
Ideally, the goal is to find the right candidate fairly quickly… because the NHL Draft is coming up sooner than you might think. Things are likely to move fast, then, in the coming days and weeks.
This morning, Elliotte Friedman shared the latest episode of his 32 Thoughts podcast and discussed the names being mentioned in Toronto and Nashville. For the Leafs, the insider mentioned…
- John Chayka (former GM of the Coyotes)
- Doug Armstrong (Blues GM)
- Dean Lombardi (former GM of the Kings)
- Mike Gillis (former GM of the Canucks)
And for the Preds, Friedman mentioned the names of…
- Bill Scott (Assistant GM of the Oilers)
- Scott White (Assistant GM of the Stars)
- Brett Petersson (Assistant GM of the Panthers)
- John Chayka (former GM of the Coyotes)
So I guess we can forget about the idea of Marc Bergevin leaving the Sabres to return to the NHL as a general manager…

The names mentioned above all have NHL experience.
But clearly, in Toronto, they really want to target someone with experience as a GM. That makes sense because they'll likely want to attract a big name to the City of Kings, given that the Leafs play in one of the NHL's biggest markets.
Unless the Leafs decide to follow the Canadiens' lead and hire someone with no experience as a general manager in the big leagues…
Even then, things could move pretty quickly—in both Toronto and Nashville.
But one thing is certain: the Leafs and the Preds can't afford to miss the mark. They need to take the time to make the right choice… because that decision will impact the team's performance for years to come.
