Cole Caufield has 49 goals. With seven games left to play, his chances of reaching 50 are excellent, let's just say.

Since the Olympiques returned (for him, it was simply a return from a break), he's been on a mission. He's on fire, and if he faced weaker goalies more often, he might have seven or eight more goals to his name.

He's in the zone.

Caufield has 28 goals in his last 27 games, and only Maurice Richard has ever done that in Canadiens history. So young fans who haven't seen Stéphane Richer score 50 in a season have a great chance to watch this young scorer rewrite history.

It's true that seeing him at the Bell Centre on Sunday would be special.

But Caufield, who says he has areas to improve in his game, also saw his two-goal night help boost his chances of winning the Maurice Richard Trophy, of all things.

Mathematically, yesterday he had about a 13% chance of winning it. But this morning, he's at 43%.

Connor McDavid (43) and the other NHL players are far behind Caufield, who has 49 goals, and Nathan MacKinnon, who has 50 goals. The Avalanche also has a game in hand over the Canadiens.

Oh, and did we mention that CC has 83 points? That's already more than one point per game for a player who recently missed a game…

It's also worth noting that the Canadiens could reach 100 points soon (they're at 98), that Nick Suzuki (94) is approaching 100 points, and that Lane Hutson (73) is approaching 80 points.

But we also note that Juraj Slafkovsky (29) is approaching 30 goals, that Noah Dobson (46) is approaching 50 points, that Ivan Demidov (59) is approaching 60 points, and that Jakub Dobes (26) is approaching 30 wins. We'll be keeping an eye on all of this.

in a nutshell

– Wow.

– Oh yeah?

– Note to self.

– Just because Slaf's pass needed a replay:

– What do you think?
