Matt Chapman is a bit of an oddball.
At first glance, it's easy to think he's a quiet guy. But once you get to know him, you realize he's actually got quite a personality.
And yesterday, he proved it once again.
After stealing a ground ball from his shortstop and throwing it a bit too high to first base (his throw wasn't terrible, but it wasn't perfect either), he made sure to put his first baseman in his place.
And he did it in front of everyone.
Casey Schmitt didn't catch Chapman's throw and must have felt bad about it. But during a visit to the mound, Chapman made sure to tell Schmitt (twice) that he needed to catch the damn ball.

That's not exactly good leadership. And without wanting to read into the third baseman's intentions, one might think he wouldn't have treated a veteran like Rafael Devers the same way.
The guys may have tried to defuse the situation in front of the media (which had to be done)… but stuff like that leaves a mark.
Casey Schmitt on Matt Chapman telling him to ‘catch the f— ball': “We're trying to win games. I mean, obviously I'm not mad about it or anything. That's baseball. I mean, those are things I should have done and didn't.”

As if the Giants (2-4) didn't already have enough on their plate with a manager whose leadership is controversial, they certainly didn't need Chapman (who has publicly criticized John Schneider during his time in Toronto and spoken out against the Blue Jays since leaving) to act this way.
It could be a long season in San Francisco.
