Alexander Ovechkin's contract is expiring. This summer, he will become a free agent.

It's generally agreed that, logically, the player has three options: stay in Washington, go play in Moscow in the KHL, or retire from hockey.

At least, those are the most popular options. However, nothing is set in stone, and nothing has been decided.

It makes sense to think that the Capitals' captain, who won the Stanley Cup in 2018, will decide to stay in Washington. But is it possible that the Caps might say goodbye to him?

According to what Renaud Lavoie said last night on TVA Sports, the buzz in the NHL is that the Caps, too, might decide to move on in order to rejuvenate the team.

Now that's a surprise.

Why? Because logically, we assumed the Caps would do everything in their power to convince Ovechkin to extend his career in Washington.

And if he's turned down, Ovechkin might even decide to stay in the NHL rather than head to Russia.

In his column, Lavoie said he wouldn't be surprised to see the Rangers reach out to him, as a way to give New York fans a treat during the difficult period the club faces in the medium term.

“I'd be surprised if Alexander Ovechkin, like many Russian players, turned down the Rangers.” – Renaud Lavoie

If Ovechkin were to leave the Caps (who recently let John Carlsson go) and stay in the NHL, the Rangers are the most likely destination in the eyes of the TVA Sports reporter.

To be continued.

To see him try to improve upon the all-time scoring record while wearing the jersey of one of Wayne Gretzky's four teams would be something.

But right now, we don't know what he'll do.
