To say the least, it's been a rough start to the 2026 season for Major League Baseball officials, with the most incompetent ones making headlines more often than not. And yesterday (Tuesday) was no exception.
Starting with the worst of them all, C.B. Bucknor, who was working as the first-base umpire during the Milwaukee Brewers' 6-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Brewers were leading by two runs in the sixth inning when Jake Bauers hit a single to the outfield. Bauers was initially called out because Bucknor determined he hadn't touched first base. The replay then clearly showed Bauers touching the bag RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE!

Television cameras then showed both managers, Pat Murphy and Kevin Cash, smiling after the replay made it abundantly clear that Bauers had touched first base. After Bucknor's call was overturned, Bauers stole second base and scored on a double by Brandon Lockridge later in the inning.
The worst part of it all is that our troubles weren't over yet on this night of baseball, as the home plate umpire for the game between the Houston Astros and the Boston Red Sox, Mark Wegner, admitted to losing track of the count during Cam Smith's nine-pitch walk.
In fact, Smith should have been called out on strikes after the third pitch of his fifth-inning at-bat.

Smith swung at the first two pitches from Red Sox starting pitcher Brayan Bello to begin his plate appearance. After the second pitch, Joey Loperfido stole second base and Christian Walker scored on the play thanks to an error by catcher Connor Wong. Then, after about 40 seconds, Smith swung and missed at a breaking ball.
It should have been a third strike, but Wegner, now in his 29th season in the majors, was up 1-2. Six pitches later, Smith drew a walk.
It should be noted, however, that no one raised any objections at the time.
