The Canadiens' season has been going very well so far. After 57 games, the club has a record of 32-17-8, which puts them in seventh place in the league standings.

But more importantly, it puts them in second place in the powerful Atlantic Division, which is a good sign for the playoff race.

That said, the Habs have still had their share of difficulties this season. Poor performances by the goalies, for example, have cost Martin St-Louis's team several wins… and there's a statistic that illustrates this well. In fact, when you look only at games where the Habs allowed three goals or less, the club's record is absolutely mind-boggling: we're talking about a 29-2-3 record.

Obviously, you might say that it makes sense for the club to win often when it doesn't concede many goals. That said, what we're seeing is that as soon as the club can count on a decent performance from a goalie (or, obviously, a good performance), it has a very good chance of winning.

In fact, only the Bruins (November 25) and the Blues (January 3) were able to beat the Habs in regulation time by scoring fewer than four goals in a game. Samuel Montembeault and Jacob Fowler were in net for both games.

What all this shows is that the Canadiens' offense is so good that the club simply needs to be decent in front of the net to get by. And once again, this suggests that the CH's biggest need heading into the trade deadline may be more on the defensive end or in front of the net.

A second-line center or a first-line winger would be nice… but if the Canadiens just give up a few less goals, they'll become almost unbeatable. Imagine what it would be like with a goalie of Carey Price's caliber behind that group, hehe.
