The Toronto Maple Leafs find themselves in a somewhat peculiar situation.
They still have 25 games to play before the end of the regular season… but at the time of writing, the team is six points behind the last playoff spot in the East. And with all the surprise teams in the division this season, things could get even more complicated in Toronto…
So what should be done with the trade deadline less than a month away (March 6)?
In Chris Johnston's view… the Leafs need to think about buying, but also selling. The club needs to make a big move—whether that's trading a big player or going out and getting one—to get a better idea of what lies ahead for the club. And that makes sense, in a way.
Chris Johnston: Re Maple Leafs: I still believe that they're primarily approaching this deadline as a seller; I think the Leafs have to be open minded about both adding and selling, I'm not talking about rentals — First Up (2/9)

This makes sense for a few reasons.
If the Leafs want to sell… it could allow Brad Treliving to seek out assets for the future. The club doesn't have much depth in terms of its picks and prospects, and if we want to think about the next few years in Toronto, we need to act before it's too late. On the other side of the coin, the Leafs have good players in place and they have the talent to make the playoffs. Picking up a good player could help in that regard…
Again, Brad Treliving will have some big decisions to make.
He may be playing for his future in Toronto because the club has not lived up to expectations since he joined the organization.
It's been disappointment after disappointment for the Leafs in recent years—especially in the playoffs—and at some point, you have to change things to make it work someday.
Because let's face it: we're not necessarily close to the Stanley Cup in the Queen City…
