If anyone still had any doubts that Connor McDavid was the best player in the world, his start to the tournament has left no one in doubt.

In two games, he already has six points. On Thursday against the Czech Republic, he had three assists, and earlier in the day, he scored one goal and had two assists against Switzerland.

Not only is he the tournament's leading scorer after Day 3 of the men's hockey tournament, he is likely to remain so at the end of the tournament. He is already five points away from the all-time Olympic record.

The record is held by Teemu Selanne and Saku Koivu, who each scored 11 points in eight Olympic games in 2006.

McDavid has six points in two games and at least two more games to play. However, he could play four if Canada advances to the Olympic final. With its victory over Switzerland today, Canada secured first place in Group B. It will therefore receive a bye in the quarterfinals and will not play in the qualifying game for the quarterfinals.

Playing four more games, McDavid would need one and a half points per game to break the record and one and a quarter points per game to tie it.

Between this record and the gold medal, Team Canada's assistant captain's goal is clear: win the gold medal. I'm sure he doesn't care about beating Koivu and Selanne. But let's just say that if he keeps this up, the best player in the world can accomplish both feats.

Unless Jon Cooper continues to juggle his lines, No. 97 will have the help of Nathan MacKinnon and Macklin Celebrini on his line to assist him in his quest for points and gold.

There are worse things than having them as linemates…
