Last year, when the Canadiens went on break for the Four Nations Challenge, things weren't going smoothly. The club had lost eight of its last ten games.
They had only 55 points in 56 games and were six points out of the playoffs.
It took a spectacular comeback by Martin St-Louis's men (and a message from the captain to his GM not to trade any of the club's players) to make the playoffs.
This year, on the heels of the Olympic break, the situation is different.
After 57 games, the Canadiens still have 72 points. They are second in their division, seven points ahead of the first club outside the playoffs (the Blue Jackets, a Metropolitan Division club), and would start at home if the playoffs began today.
Of course, nothing is set in stone. There are still 25 big games left, and the team will have to work hard between now and the end of the season to ensure they make the playoffs in 2026. But right now, things are going well.
The difficulty lies in the fact that the Canadiens have one of the toughest schedules in the NHL between now and the end of the season. According to Tankathon, who feels quite alone since his friends in Montreal are no longer targeting him, the Habs have the eighth-toughest schedule between now and April.
The Lightning (twice), the Hurricanes (twice), the Red Wings, the Bruins, the Islanders (three times), and the Blue Jackets (twice) are among the tough matchups awaiting the habs between now and the end of the season.
Obviously, Martin St-Louis, his coaching staff, and his players will have to do their job.
However, we will also be watching to see how much Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton will give the players more options on the heels of the deadline—despite the surplus of players in town.
This will be something to watch between now and March 6. But with only three games left before the deadline, it's safe to assume that the Canadiens have an idea of what they want to do.
