For several seasons, the search for a second-line center has been seen as a top priority for the Canadiens. It was viewed as a major hole in the lineup, something that had to be fixed in order to move on to the next level.
But according to Tony Marinaro, that assessment no longer holds water. Not because the Habs have solved the problem once and for all, but because an internal solution is already emerging game after game.
Since the start of the season, Oliver Kapanen has been used as the second center alongside Ivan Demidov and, now, Juraj Slafkovsky. Far from being overwhelmed by the role, the young center has stepped up, displaying stable and responsible play in both offensive and defensive situations.
“The need for a second-line center is no longer a need, now it's a want.” – Tony Marinaro

This statement, made by Marinaro on the Sick podcast, sums up the Canadiens' current situation.
The Habs are no longer in a state of emergency where every game highlights a glaring weakness at center.
The chemistry between Kapanen and Demidov has been one of the most encouraging elements since the start of the season. The two players are naturally comfortable on the ice, whether in transition or in the offensive zone, which gives the second line real consistency.
Kapanen may not yet be an established top-six center in the NHL, but his current performance allows him to fill that role without the team suffering. And that's precisely what Marinaro highlights in the excerpt: the Canadiens can afford to slow down because the position is already credibly filled.
According to Tony Marinaro, the message is clear: the context has changed. Montreal is no longer forced to address this issue immediately, simply because the gap is no longer as wide as it once was. The line is working, development is on track, and the organization can patiently evaluate its options.
This is where the distinction between need and desire comes into play. The Habs would like to improve their top six, but they are no longer under pressure to act.
Especially since a major need now seems to be emerging at the sixth defenseman position.
