When an NHL executive gives an interview, his goal (one of his goals, at least) is to avoid creating controversy.
Jeff Gorton, who has seen it all in the NHL, knows how to achieve this. This was particularly evident when it came time for him to talk about his team's trade deadline.
But in his interview with Eric Engels, it was also evident when he addressed the topic of goalies.
“We'd like to be aggressive, and we will be, if need be.” Jeff Gorton knows he's in a tricky spot as his team approaches the trade deadline. @EricEngels sat down to discuss strategies with the Canadiens president of hockey operations. https://t.co/FjPX9me1Vj

Basically, the Canadiens president said what needed to be said. He said that the plan was to keep Jacob Fowler down this season, that Marco Marciano would go help the prospect during the Olympic break, that the search for a goalie coach down below was going well…
And he said this:
We're probably more comfortable than people think with our two goalies. – Jeff Gorton on Jakub Dobes and Samuel Montembeault
Obviously, as I said at the outset, Gorton wasn't born yesterday: he knows very well that the best strategy for his team is to give the guys confidence.
I'm not saying he doesn't mean what he said: I'm saying he can't say the opposite.
With the trade market being pretty crazy (in terms of prices) right now, Jeff Gorton can't publicly say he wants reinforcements because his options are limited.
And if he has something up his sleeve (whether it's a trade or the arrival of a québécois goalie he would bring out of retirement, like David Savard or Marc-André Fleury), he's not going to tell the media. Especially not after his goalies' superb week.
David Savard played goalie this morning in Brossard.
He faced shots from Alex Newhook.
P.S. Forget Marc-André Fleury. Savard is the one we need.

But anyway. Ultimately, for the moment, everything suggests that the Canadiens will continue with the two goalies they have… hoping that it will hold up.
And in the meantime, we can wonder who would play if the club had an important game to play in the short term.
