Yesterday, the Canadiens sent Samuel Blais to waivers, as you know.
Patrik Laine's name came up in discussions, but it quickly became clear that no, the goal was not to make room for him. We shouldn't expect to see the Finn play tonight.
Renaud Lavoie (BPM Sports) and Eric Engels (Sick Podcast) both said the same thing about this.Lavoie reiterated that the habs mainly wanted to play Blais during the break, as he hasn't played since mid-January.
But there's another aspect on which both men agree: the Canadiens shouldn't necessarily make any moves today, on the heels of the trade freeze that takes effect at 3 p.m.
Of course, that could change in the meantime. But as things stand, the Canadiens are not expected to be big players on the market today, or in the next few hours.
Remember that the Canadiens will be practicing at 11:30 a.m. this morning in preparation for their game against the Jets. We'll be watching the practice to see who is likely to play.
Other than that, in addition to the trade market, we'll be keeping an eye on the 2 p.m. waivers deadline.#SamuelBlais
It's therefore possible that the Canadiens will decide to take it easy and that the Patrik Laine situation won't necessarily be resolved today— unless there's a change.
But the one that should be settled is Artemi Panarin.
Several teams are still in the running to get their hands on the talented Russian player. The Hurricanes and Florida clubs are the ones to watch right now.
This is clearly the story of the day in the NHL.
There was a lot of back-and-forth on the Artemi Panarin file last night, but still no announcement. The Rangers' goal is to trade him by 3:00 p.m. today. @TVASports

Chris Drury will have to find a way to maximize the return for his player, as this could completely change the game for the New York club's rebuilding efforts.
Missing the mark is not an option.

– Good question.
At this point, should Jakub Dobeš be considered the Canadiens' #1 goalie? pic.twitter.com/OBy6Mqy4rM

– A name to watch.
Hennadiy Synchuk will be the X factor for the #CFMTL this season. He's better integrated into the group and plays at MLS pace. He's much more comfortable than in 2025 and stands out on the field.
If #CFMTL wants to have a good season, Synchuk will have to be part of the solution. MVP… pic.twitter.com/5A5eBBgYRP

– Wow.
Andrei Vasilevskiy hasn't lost in regulation time in his last 16 games… A streak that began on December 18, 2025!
