Recently, Arber Xhekaj's playing time has been melting away like snow in the sun. And it will melt even more tonight.
Renaud Lavoie, who attended the Canadiens' practice today, reported that Jayden Struble was paired with Alexandre Carrier in practice this morning.
Everything indicated that the Sheriff would be sitting out tonight. And that has been confirmed by the Canadiens.

We can all agree that at this point, when Martin St-Louis wants to shake things up on the blue line, he changes his #6 defenseman. The top five guys in the hierarchy never skip their turn.
Following the Canadiens' loss and poor defensive performance, Struble will get his chance before going on vacation.
But that won't be the only change, as Samuel Montembeault will be back in net. He was the starting goalie in practice this morning… and his presence in front of the net was confirmed by the Habs.
This comes as no surprise.
Early indications from Habs skate are Sam Montembeault getting the start and Jayden Struble coming in for Arber Xhekaj.

Jakub Dobes has played the last four games, and it makes sense to give the Québécois a start against a weaker club before heading into the break.
We didn't expect any changes offensively—and there won't be any—since Alexandre Texier and Alex Newhook are injured. Patrik Laine is a special case, and Samuel Blais is on waivers.
Overtime
– Yesterday at this time, Alex Newhook was skating.
It's 11 a.m. at the CN Sports Complex in Brossard, where all is quiet for now.
Behind the scenes, however, it's possible that Kent Hughes and the Canadiens' management team are hard at work trying to close a deal.

– Interesting.
David Reinbacher was on the ice this morning with the extra players (Will Dineen and Ryan O'Rourke) and goalies Jacob Fowler and Hunter Jones.
