The Canadiens made a change to their goalie coach this week. Eric Raymond, who had been in the position since 2021, lost his job, and Marco Marciano came in to replace him.
On an interim basis, at least… but no one would be surprised if he were there to stay.
The club has opted for a change of voice in an attempt to revive its goalies… and if Jakub Dobes is to be believed, it didn't take long to make a difference.
On the latest episode ofthe Basu & Godin Notebook, Marc-Antoine Godin revealed that while chatting with Dobes, he learned that Marciano came to see him during the second intermission of Thursday's game against the Nordiques to give him some specific advice.
The Czech, who didn't want to reveal the advice (which makes sense), found it very useful… to the point where he believes it made the difference in the third period.
On the Basu & Godin Notebook yesterday, they mentioned that Habs goaltending coach Marco Marciano went to see Jakub Dobes during the 2nd period intermission vs COL and gave him a specific tip.
Dobes said it really helped him and it made a difference in the 3rd period. pic.twitter.com/tJoLOJHlN4

Dobes explains that before the game, Marciano didn't bombard him with advice and just told him to have fun. In the coach's eyes, he would have plenty of time to talk to him over the next few weeks.
But clearly, he noticed something that needed to be adjusted… and that allowed Dobes to stop 11 of the 12 shots he faced in the third period.
We don't know if Raymond, who was there before, used to advise his goalies in this way between periods. But in fact, if Dobes felt it necessary to specify all this, we can assume that this was not necessarily the case.
That's a valid approach, too, in the sense that you don't want to throw your goalie off his game during a match. But Marciano understood how to push the right buttons with Dobes.
We'll see if the new goalie coach can continue to help his protégés make a difference. But clearly, his first game was a success in that regard.
So that's good news.

– Interesting.
Juraj Slafkovsky today on the difference between last year and this year's Habs team:
“I think it's just mindset. All the guys here, we know what we're fighting for. We make every game the biggest game of the year for us. It's a mindset thing. We grow, we've played more games.… pic.twitter.com/jXwT7jkrTN
