Matthew Schaefer hates the Rangers (and he’s not afraid to post negative comments about them)
Matthew Schaefer was selected with the first overall pick in the latest NHL draft. Immediately after being drafted by the Islanders, he said:
We're going to beat the New York Rangers every time we play them. – Matthew Schaefer
There's a great rivalry between the two clubs. And let's just say Schaefer quickly understood that too.

Clearly, the Islanders defenseman doesn't like the Rangers. He knows that the two clubs have a rich history and that there have been some great battles between the two teams in the past.
But it doesn't stop there either.
Not at all, in fact…
Yesterday, after his club's victory over the Blue Shirts, Schaefer taunted Rangers fans. How?
By saying that his team's fans are louder than those of the other club in New York. And he said it out loud with a huge smile on his face.
The young guy is a little cocky. And you know what? I like that. I really like that!
Matthew Schaefer on the Islanders-Rangers rivalry atmosphere:
“The building is full of both fans. It's loud. Our fans are way louder than theirs. It's pretty fun when we get on the board and our fans are cheering.” pic.twitter.com/2rBzHFlrTe

Since the start of the season, the Islanders have played the Rangers four times. And the Isles have…
- Won 5-0 on November 8
- Won 2-0 on December 27
- Won 5-2 on January 28
- Won 2-1 on January 29 (yesterday)
The Long Island club is 4-0 this season against the Rangers. So Matthew Schaefer is right for now… because he kept the promise he made at the last draft when he said that the Islanders will always beat their longtime rivals.
The more time passes, the more I'd like to see these two teams face off in the playoffs. Matthew Schaefer must be dreaming about it too… because clearly, the kid isn't afraid to be a little cheeky when necessary.
That's what it means to be confident!
