There's a new development in the Artemi Panarin saga with the Rangers.

The Russian forward will be left out of Wednesday night's Rangers game for protective reasons.

In other words, New York wants to avoid him getting injured before a trade takes place.

Panarin is not expected to play again until the Olympic break. New York really doesn't want to risk him getting injured and losing him for nothing as a free agent this summer.

We knew that Panarin no longer fit into the Rangers' future plans and that a trade before the deadline was almost inevitable. But this time, it could happen even before the Olympic break.

For now, the team Panarin would like to be traded to is the Florida Panthers, as we reported a few days ago.

We also know the Rangers' asking price for Panarin. The Blue Shirts are reportedly seeking a return at least as good as last season's Brock Nelson trade.

We're talking about a first- and third-round pick, a good prospect, and an established depth player. And that would be the starting price.

With 57 points in 52 games this season, Panarin would be a welcome addition to virtually any NHL team. We're talking about a luxury rental player here.

That is, if the trade doesn't also involve a contract extension.

Panarin is in the final season of a contract worth approximately $11.46 million annually on the payroll. We can therefore expect New York to retain part of his salary if he heads to a Stanley Cup contender.

Artemi Panarin may have played his last game in a Rangers uniform.

Overtime

– We can't wait to see it.

– We wish him lots of home runs.

Wow!
