Since the start of the season, Jacob Fowler and Kaapo Kahkonen have shared the Rocket's net.
Both goalies have been called up by the Canadiens, but only Fowler has had the chance to play with Montreal. With so few opportunities to return to NHL hockey, Kahkonen may be tempted to leave North America.
According to Swedish media outletExpressen, Kahkonen is considering playing in Switzerland or Sweden for the rest of his career.

A fourth-round pick in 2014, Kahkonen was a permanent backup goalie in the NHL from 2020 to 2024, but has not seen any action in the Bettman circuit for a year.
He has become a regular in the American Hockey League, although he is not the official number one with the Rocket due to the presence of Jacob Fowler.
Placed on waivers by the Canadiens at the start of the season, Kahkonen was not claimed by another NHL team, proving that he may need to consider a change of course for the rest of his career.
The SHL (Sweden) and the National League (Switzerland) could be favorable destinations.
Since the start of the season with Laval, he has averaged 2.67 goals against with a save percentage of .905. These statistics are good enough to attract the attention of a European team looking for an experienced goaltender.
This wouldn't be the first time a Rocket goalie has headed to Switzerland.
After one season with the Rocket in 2024-25, Connor Hughes joined Lausanne HC, where he is currently doing quite well. The funny thing is that Hughes had almost the same statistics last season as Kahkonen has this season.
Kahkonen's potential departure could be beneficial for Jacob Fowler. Right now, we have a 1 (A) and 1 (B) goalie situation, which limits the American prospect's playing time.
If Kahkonen heads to Switzerland, he will get more playing time and be one of the best players on his team, while Fowler could take advantage of the extra starts to further his development.
