Kent Hughes will try to improve his team before the NHL trade deadline. That's no secret.
But what will the GM do?
Will he acquire a top-six forward? A player who can play on the bottom six but still contribute offensively? A right-handed defenseman to balance the defensive pairs? A goalie with NHL experience? Hmm…
Among the options, going after a quality center makes sense. Oliver Kapanen (one point in nine games) is starting to slow down, and the habs will need depth to go far in the playoffs.
That's why we've been hearing Nazem Kadri's name mentioned in Montreal in recent weeks. And Elliotte Friedman (NHL Now) added a little fuel to the fire… by saying that the habs are “definitely” one of the clubs interested in the Flames player.
Elliotte Friedman: Re Nazem Kadri: Montreal's definitely been a team, and I think there've been a few others, but the biggest issue there is retention – NHL Now (1/27)
— NHL Rumor Report (@NHLRumorReport) January 28, 2026
The troubling issue, according to Elliotte Friedman, is that the Flames only have one spot to retain salary at the moment.
The other two spots are occupied by Jacob Markström and Rasmus Andersson, who have already been traded from Calgary.
At $7 million per season until the summer of 2029, it's Nazem Kadri's salary that is particularly frightening. The salary cap will go up, we know that… but it's still a lot of money for a guy who is getting older and starting to slow down.
And then there's the price tag, which could become a problem. The Flames are rebuilding and won't trade their veteran for peanuts…
All this to say that Nazem Kadri's name is still attracting attention and that the habs are clearly involved in the deal. It seems like this story refuses to die… and we know that there's no smoke without fire when it comes to rumors like this.
It's interesting, at least.
