It's the news of the day in Montreal: the Canadiens fired their goaltending coach, Éric Raymond, earlier this morning.

Marco Marciano is coming in as backup, having been sought after throughout the NHL. And everything being said about him is positive.

Kevin Poulin, who played alongside him in Laval with the Rocket, praised his coaching skills.

It's simple, really: Poulin said in an interview (TVA Sports) that Marco Marciano helped him extend his career. The goaltender was struggling to find his footing after some difficult years in Europe, and Marciano helped him regain his confidence by changing his playing style when Poulin arrived in Laval.

Marciano made him understand that he didn't have to move around so much in front of the net to be successful, and that changed things for the goalie.

Poulin took advantage of this and enjoyed a successful end to his professional career.

Marco Marciano arrives in Montreal with all eyes on the goaltending situation.

He has big shoes to fill, to put it another way.

But still, it's encouraging in a way because the comments about him are really good. His style is completely different from Éric Raymond's, and maybe that can help put Samuel Montembeault back in his place.

After all, we saw Monty come back from Laval with a certain amount of confidence. And it was with Marciano that he worked during his (short) stint in the American Hockey League…

I'm really looking forward to seeing how this plays out. But just watching him work at practice this morning, it seems like it's been good to see a coach as involved as he is on the ice.

He seems to bring a completely different energy… and I (really) like that.

Overtime

– Yeah.

– Oh.

– Attention, everyone.

– Good luck!
