The trade market is dead right now in the NHL.
We're not seeing much action, but things could pick up soon. There are likely to be trades before the Olympic break, and of course, other clubs will make moves before the trade deadline (March 6).
And as we reported last weekend, there could be more sellers than we think.
There are three clubs to watch closely in the coming weeks, as Marco D'Amico points out in a recent article (RG Media).
The Flames, Blue Jackets, and Kraken are all in somewhat similar situations: things haven't been going well lately, and the next few weeks will really dictate what happens next.
We could expect to see these clubs trade big names to get something good in return… but also to maximize their chances of getting the best pick in the next draft.
With the roster freeze looming, sources indicate teams like Calgary, Columbus, and Seattle face big calls that could kickstart the NHL trade market.

James Mirtle (The Athletic) wonders if the Toronto Maple Leafs might join the sellers in the coming weeks.
The club has lost its last five home games, Craig Berube has just thrown his players under the bus… and things really seem to be going to shit in the Queen City right now.
Brad Treliving may have no choice but to do something if he wants to keep his job. Because right now, he may be starting to feel the heat…
James Mirtle: Re Leafs: Another two or three losses in the next week should be enough to put up a “for sale” sign; don't know if…Treliving will go that route while his team still has a shot at the playoffs. It's fairly clear that his job is in jeopardy – The Athletic (1/27)

Patrik Laine ranks 24th on The Athletic's list of the 40 players most likely to change addresses.
But… even though the list in question isn't loaded with talent, we can see that there are still some pretty important guys who are likely to be traded in the coming weeks. Artemi Panarin, Vincent Trocheck, Robert Thomas, Blake Coleman, Dougie Hamilton, Nazem Kadri, Jonathan Marchessault…
These are the names to watch. And of course… the Canadiens will also be worth keeping an eye on because they are looking for a second-line center AND a winger who can play on the first line.
Overtime
– Fair enough.

– Good point.
