Everyone’s talking about it: Nick Suzuki (again) criticized for his French

On Sunday evening, the four habs players who will be participating in the Olympic Games appeared on theTout le monde en parle television program. The interview, which was pre-recorded, will not exactly go down in history.

The guys didn't really seem comfortable, and it made for some awkward moments.

The highlight was when Nick Suzuki was asked about his French skills. You could tell the question caught him off guard… and he replied that he can say, “My name is Nick Suzuki, how are you?”That's it.

Obviously, considering that he claims to have been taking French lessons for several years, that's pretty funny. And in an article forLa Presse, Hugo Dumas didn't hold back when it came to the captain:

Can we now stop believing the big collective lie that [Nick Suzuki] is learning French? – Hugo Dumas

Dumas, who is a cultural columnist (and therefore has an outside perspective compared to people who are deeply immersed in the world of hockey), finds the captain's level of French “clearly insufficient” for a guy who is the captain of the Canadiens and has been in Montreal since 2019.

In his opinion, it barely qualifies as Duolingo's first level.

In fact, one might wonder if Suzuki's response is attributable (at least in part) to the fact that the question caught him off guard. Perhaps he didn't expect to have to speak French, and the reality ofthe pre-recorded live broadcast caused him to come out with… that.

But on the other hand, considering that Suzuki has been saying for years that he thinks it's important to learn French, that he gave an interview in French to TVA Sports at the beginning of the season, and that he does commercials in French, it's hard to believe that he never considered the possibility of being asked about it, you know.

In any case, it's true that itlooks bad. Whether it's because he doesn't speak French at all or because he didn't expect to be asked the question, the result is, unsurprisingly, exposing him to criticism.

I can't wait to see if that will eventually change.
