Nick Suzuki has already been officially selected to represent Team Canada at the 2026 Olympics, but his specific role continues to be the subject of speculation.
And according to Bruce Cassidy, we shouldn't be surprised to see the Canadiens captain playing on the wing rather than at center.
With Canada's roster boasting an abundance of elite centers, the question isn't so much whether Suzuki deserves his spot (it's already secured), but rather how to maximize his impact.
Bruce Cassidy, head coach of the Vegas Golden Knights and assistant coach of Team Canada, has confirmed that this scenario is being seriously considered internally.
“There could be a few different options for him. I know he has the ability to play on the wing, so when you look at McDavid, MacKinnon, and Crosby, as well as some of the centers on the team, you see a player who can move up the lineup and give you more on the wing, rather than being lower in the lineup at center.” – Bruce Cassidy

These comments are revealing. Cassidy isn't talking about a player doomed to a supporting role behind Connor McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon, and Sidney Crosby. Instead, he's talking about the possibility of moving Suzuki to the wing to allow him to have more offensive impact and play a more important role in the lineup.
In an Olympic context, this versatility is extremely valuable. The habs captain can adapt quickly, face the best opposing players, contribute defensively, and remain effective without necessarily playing center.
His hockey IQ and consistency make him a reliable player for the coaching staff, no matter the situation.
His leadership in Montreal also strengthens his case. Suzuki is known for his calmness, maturity, and ability to elevate his game in important moments, qualities that Team Canada has always sought.
Nick Suzuki will be in Milan-Cortina in a few days. And in light of the discussions already underway, everything indicates that his future will be on the wing… with a potentially much more important role than expected. The question remains: which center will he play with and on which line during the tournament?

Regardless of your opinion of Bill Belichick, him not being a first ballot Hall of Famer is a disgrace — and a direct indictment on the Hall of Fame itself.
