Great news for the Canadiens.

Alex Newhook, for the first time since being injured at the start of the season, was spotted skating on the rink at Complexe CN in Brossard.

Colleague Patrick Guillet took a video of the Canadiens' forward, who was wearing full gear for the occasion.

Newhook has occasionally attended the Canadiens' practices in recent months, but there's nothing like seeing a player jump on the ice for the first time.

That's got to be good for his morale.

Newhook, who had an excellent start to the season for the Canadiens (we were beginning to talk of a blossoming in his case), was injured on November 13 and underwent ankle surgery.

The basic prognosis is that he'll be back by the deadline. Will it be before then?

Newhook's skating is nothing to be afraid of. It's obviously good news for the Canadiens' player, but we can see that he's not giving 100% either.

That's normal: he has to shake off the rust and potential pain. You can't do that by shouting scissors.

It's unclear whether Patrik Laine is still injured or not, which makes Newhook the Canadiens' last big injury. The other injured players have returned to action.

The Canadiens will practice at 10:30 this morning. Don't expect Newhook with the others.

– So why go through with it? He knew what he was getting into.
