Despite last night's tough 4-3 loss to the Boston Bruins in a huge divisional duel, there were positives to take away from the Montreal Canadiens' game.
And that positive has a name: Cole Caufield.
The Habs forward was sparkling last night, scoring his second career hat trick in brilliant fashion with three superb goals.
Caufield's excellent performance took him from 26 goals to 29 goals this season, which now places him at 4ᵉ among the NHL's top scorers.

It's been a long time since we've seen a Habs player this high up on a list of top stats, and it just goes to show how far Montreal has come with a competitive, but above all, talented team.
Caufield is second only to the two best players in the world, Nathan MacKinnon (38 goals), Connor McDavid (32 goals), and Jason Robertson (30 goals), who has established himself as a prolific scorer over the past few seasons.
The Habs' #13 has soared up the rankings in recent days, thanks in no small part to his current streak of five consecutive games with at least one goal, during which he has found the back of the net eight times.
This is the first time since Guy Lafleur that a Habs player has strung together two seasons with at least one five-game goal streak.
It really seems that being overlooked by the U.S. Olympic team has motivated Caufield to prove that his non-selection was a mistake.
Since the announcement of Team USA, Caufield has ten goals and 14 points in 12 games.
Since being left off Team USA, Cole Caufield has 10 goals and 14 points in 12 games and two periods.

Seriously, the U.S. will really regret not selecting Caufield, when they're eliminated in the semifinals in 3-on-3 overtime against Sweden.

So Caufield is really on fire right now, and he's continuing his excellent season, when he's not only scoring, but assisting his teammates too.
That's 53 points in 52 games, which is a pace of 83 points and 45 goals.
That's definitely better than his 37-goal, 70-point season of 2024-2025.
