With the trade deadline fast approaching, the Canadiens could be on the move. That's what teams in a good position to make the playoffs do.
The only problem is, to get big money, you have to give big money. Several teams have reportedly spoken with Kent Hughes about Michael Hage's availability.
According to Darren Dreger on TSN 690 on Friday, seeing Hage leave Montreal isn't going to happen.
“It's not going to happen.” – Darren Dreger
The difference between teams like the Avalanche and the Canadiens is that Montreal hasn't quite completed its rebuild. On the ice, the performances are adequate, but not yet to the point of saying the Canadiens are an NHL behemoth.
Kent Hughes is the kind of general manager who likes to bet on the future. To trade his best prospect in Michael Hage would be to go against his own values.
Michael Hage is probably the Canadiens' most confident prospect right now. He was dominant at the World Junior Championship and is equally, if not more, dominant in the NCAA.
To illustrate just how good Hage is this year, he was recently named as one of the candidates for the Hobey Baker Trophy for the best player in the NCAA.
Hage's prowess is impressive, but it's also the fact that he plays center that makes him so valuable in the eyes of Kent Hughes and other NHL GMs.
It's not impossible to see Hage leave Montreal via a trade, but the return would have to be monstrous for it to happen.
As Darren Dreger explained on TSN 690, we can expect a less crazy market.
At the same time, it would be very surprising to see the Canadiens' GM reach into his pocket for a rental player when his team isn't yet one of the Stanley Cup favorites.
Kent Hughes doesn't like losing players for nothing, and that's not going to change now.

Per multiple sources, I'm told the @DallasStars and @Avalanche are among the likely destinations for @Canucks F Kane via potential trade. #HockeyX pic.twitter.com/HicMv0SB35
