The more time passes, the more we realize that the Patrik Laine file is becoming a hot potato in Montreal.

We know that the Canadiens increasingly need to free up space on their roster, and that Laine is a prime candidate to leave.

And as of this morning, it looks like the matter has been taken to another level.

But then again. If we're going to get into the details, we need to understand what parameters Kent Hughes needs to work with in order to achieve his goals.

So, basically, what are the parameters of the contract?

You have to understand that Laine will be a free agent this summer and that his real salary in 2025-2026 is $7.1 million. A club picking him up would have to pay him that amount pro rata for the season, even if his cap hit is $8.7 million.

But since the Canadiens would be willing to withhold 50% of the salary, that would reduce the bill.

Above all, don't forget that Laine has a partial no-trade clause with 10 teams. That means he can say no to nearly a third of the National League.

Of course, a guy like Laine doesn't really need to put any particular clubs on his list. He can just put the 10 teams most likely to go for him, for the sake of control.

In other words, the chances are good that the Canadiens will have to work hand in hand with Laine and his agent to find him a new spot at the end of the season.

And Laine will have the choice of exercising his clause (if necessary) or not.

That's what happened in 2024, when he left Columbus for Montreal. And even though his contract is becoming less onerous, his performance hasn't improved recently, let's say.

If he lifts it, it'll be to help himself finish the year strong and put himself in a good position this summer… or to leave Montreal quickly.
