Earlier today, we learned that Seth Jones would not be able to take part in the upcoming Olympic Games. This opened up a spot on the U.S. defensive brigade, just hours after Lane Hutson dominated as Bill Guerin visited the Bell Centre.
Except that, in the end, the Habs defenseman wasn't chosen: instead, Jackson LaCombe, who plays for the Ducks, joined the group.
And of course, there was a lot of talk in Montreal, but also in the United States.
Andy Strickland, who has good connections south of the border, went to the source to find out what led to this choice. And here's the reason he got from the folks at USA Hockey:
We like [Lane] Hutson, but he's small and we already have Quinn [Hughes]. – According to those connected with the USA Olympic Team
According to those connected with the USA Olympic team on why Jackson Lacombe over Lane Hutson… “LaCombe has more versatility and size. Plays PP, PK defends well. Skates amazing. We like Hutson but he's an undersized guy and we already have Quinn.”
– Andy Strickland (@andystrickland) January 22, 2026
It's not a huge surprise to learn that, in fact. We're well aware that the presence of Quinn Hughes is a hindrance to Hutson's chances… and a guy like LaCombe brings a different profile.
We like his versatility, his size, and his ability to defend.
But the people Strickland spoke to also praised LaCombe's other quality: his ability to play on the powerplay. In reality, we know he's capable… but considering that Hutson makes it his bread and butter, we can assume that wasn't a determining factor either.
LaCombe clearly doesn't have Hutson's offensive talent, we agree… but he's a guy who can help out in all sorts of ways. Hutson, for example, doesn't really play short-handed in Montreal (although he has done well when forced to do so).
Did Lane Hutson deserve to be on #TeamUSA?

What's reassuring for Hutson is that there are people in-house who love him. The problem is that Quinn Hughes will be around for several more years, too.
I can't wait to see when the Habs defenseman gets his chance… if it ever comes, of course.
