Alexis Lafrenière is still young.
At 24, he still has time to blossom into a dominant NHL player. That's what's expected of him, because the expectations for him are really high.
That's what happens, after all, when you're selected with the very first pick in the draft. But…
But Laffy is (already) in his sixth season in the National League, and he's not producing the way we'd like him to in New York. The Québécois has 28 points (10 goals) in 50 games this season: not enough for a talented player.
And there's a reason why there have been so many rumors about him in recent years…
Elliotte Friedman added fuel to the fire on his podcast, saying he sees the Rangers thinking about trading Lafrenière before too long. Reminder: we're entering a

Of course, this isn't the first time we've talked about this possibility.
Seeing the Rangers trade Lafrenière seems to have been an option for several years now… because the player isn't able to become the player we thought he was going to be.
And at a certain point, it's clear that time is running out in New York. Patience is all very well… but time is against Lafrenière too.
That said, Lafrenière could be hard to trade because he's in the first (of seven) years of a contract that pays him $7.45 million annually.
He still has six years left on his contract (at a high salary) after the current season. And I wonder if that's going to scare off some clubs in the discussions…
To be continued. But let's not fall out of our chairs if Alexis Lafrenière plays for another club before too long… and JiC will be happy if it's Montreal.
