Let's take a look at the Canadiens' divisional standings.

Looking at everything as of this morning, we can see that five teams are currently in the playoffs, as the Bruins and Sabres have draft spots.

The Maple Leafs are just one point away from the playoffs, and the Panthers are not to be underestimated, having won the last two Stanley Cup finals.

Winning the division (or finishing in the top three) won't exactly be easy. Making the playoffs won't be easy either, since every defeat is of the utmost importance.

We know that making major transactions in 2026 isn't always easy. But even so, there are teams in the Canadiens' division who are trying.

For example?

Frank Seravalli reports that the Maple Leafs are more than ever on the lookout for Dougie Hamilton and that the Red Wings have their noses in the Elias Pettersson pie.

In both cases, it's fair to ask whether this is the right strategy. Especially in the case of the Maple Leafs, who like to go after big names just to go after big names.

But it does prove that teams want to give themselves an edge in a tough division.

The Maple Leafs, who have been doing well since firing Marc Savard, haven't given up. And the Red Wings are finally having a season that lives up to expectations, but they're still hungry.

In fact, they're certainly not the only two teams looking for reinforcements. It'll be fascinating to follow everything from now until the trade deadline on March 6, especially to find out whether Kent Hughes will also be heading for the fence.
