The Pittsburgh Penguins are enjoying a fine season so far. The club has a record of 22-14-10, which puts them in third place in the Metropolitan.
This exceeds the expectations placed in them before the start of the campaign.
So for a while now, the idea of the Pens trading their veterans hasn't been as popular as it once was. The club is competitive, after all: trading Sidney Crosby and/or Evgeni Malkin doesn't make a ton of sense.
However, in a recent piece for Sportsnet, Nick Kypreos took stock of the Malkin situation. And according to the tipster, the Penguins would be very, very open to trading him:
If they have an opportunity to trade Malkin, the Penguins will take it. – Nick Kypreos
Nick Kypreos: If there is an opportunity to move Evgeni Malkin…Pittsburgh's front office would take it; this organization knows it needs to pivot to younger players. However the team performs, Malkin will have final say on how this situation plays out – Sportsnet (1/14)

All this is rather peculiar in view of the fact that the Penguins, at the moment, are rolling along nicely. The club is on a nice success streak, and to see that they'd like to trade Malkin (who will have the final say on the whole thing and won't leave if he doesn't want to leave) is special.
According to Kypreos, the club wants to make room for youth, which explains why they'd like to trade a 39-year-old at the end of his contract. But we agree that the 39-year-old in question is a special case because of his place in the team's history.
Obviously, Malkin would be an interesting guy for many teams if he were interested in leaving. But in reality, he'll be the one choosing his next destination should he have to leave: he won't be auctioned off like other rental players.
And that's assuming he wants to leave, which is far from certain. So we'll be keeping a close eye on this one.

– Logical.
Pierre LeBrun: Re Canadiens: I don't think they want to push the issue and get ahead of themselves before the trade deadline; if there's an opportunity to add a player who can help them this year and beyond, I think they'll look at it – SC with Jay Onrait (1/14)
