The price is REALLY high for Kiefer Sherwood

The Canucks have decided not to hide their game.

The club has announced in recent days that a rebuild is inevitable in Vancouver. Things haven't been going well within the organization for several months now, and we're obviously fed up with the way things have been going lately.

As a result, some guys are going to become available. And I'm thinking in particular of Kiefer Sherwood… who's been attracting attention on the market for some time now.

We know, however, that the Canucks won't give him away for nothing on the open market either.

And according to Darren Dreger… getting Sherwood out of Vancouver could cost quite a bit:

The demand for this player is pretty high; he's at least a 1st [pick]. I had a general manager tell me… it's a 1st and beyond. – Darren Dreger

Wow…

We know that Kent Hughes is going to be aggressive on the market to improve his club.

That's part of his plan, and it's no secret either. The GM mentioned during his mid-season review that he always has his eyes open in the event that he can find the player he wants… and the Habs, for their part, want to get their hands on a robust player who can score goals according to what's circulating in the NHL.

But would Hughes really be willing to pay that much for a 30-year-old who's starting to look good and who'll be as free as a bird as of July 1?

That's where my ambiguity lies…

Because let's agree: at that price, the Canadiens might be better off looking for a player who can play in the top-6 in the long term.

Sure, it would cost more than a first-round pick and a prospect to acquire a quality forward, but the Habs also have other pieces they can include in a deal if they need to get a guy who can help on the top-6 forward line right away.

All that to say, a first-round pick and a prospect for Kiefer Sherwood is a no-no for me…
