A promise made, a promise kept.

Kent Hughes didn't think the situation in front of the Habs net was ideal, and the goaltending threesome is now a thing of the past.

Jacob Fowler has been traded to Laval and will continue his development in the AHL.

While the decision may displease some, given that the young goalie had done well in Montreal since his recall, it makes sense that the organization would want to give him as many starts as possible, and he'll be able to do so with the Rocket.

This is all the more true with the Olympic break just around the corner.

With three goalies in Montreal, neither Fowler nor Dobes had enough starts to continue their development. Practice time is all well and good, but a young goalie needs to play regularly to develop.

And with Samuel Montembeault back in form, the situation wasn't ideal for the Habs' two young goalies.

However, despite his dismissal by the Rocket, his Montreal teammates had nothing but good things to say about Fowler, as we learn in an article by Jean-François Chaumont published on NHL.com.

Montembeault really liked what he saw of the young goaltender:

“I thought he was really good. He's just 21. He's impressive. Technically, I think he's really strong. He moves well and follows the puck well

Alexandre Carrier, who understands that the situation isn't easy for Fowler, agrees, but isn't worried about the young goalie's future either.

“It's not easy when you go back down. You want to stay up there obviously. There are mixed emotions for him. He'll have to play well to get back to the top. I've seen him play for a month and I'm not worried about him. I like the way he behaves. He's a pro and he'll come to Laval with the right attitude.”

Indeed, Fowler has little to reproach himself for during his time in Montreal, and he has shown that he is ready to help the team if the goalkeepers are still struggling between now and the end of the season.

A situation the organization and fans would no doubt like to avoid.
