Yesterday, the Canadiens surprised many by announcing that Alexandre Texier had signed a two-year contract extension. He will earn $2.5 million per year from 2026 to 2028.
What many people are wondering is why Texier didn't wait a bit before signing such a contract?
Craig Button, who spoke on Tony Marinaro's Sick Podcast, said that waiting often costs you more money — or even the player.
Why did the #GoHabsGo sign Alex Texier to a contract extension after only 25 games in Montreal?@CraigJButton: “Usually waiting just costs you more and may end up costing you the player “#thesickpodcast @TonyMarinaro pic.twitter.com/TWPLGwELVl

Of necessity, we know that the Canadiens don't intend to trade Texier in the short term. It would have been easier to do so without a contract extension, since he would have been a free agent WITH restrictions this summer anyway…
But above all, trading a guy you've just signed until 2028 seems wrong. The Canadiens' reputation, which is obviously excellent throughout the Bettman circuit, would have suffered.
But does that mean the Habs have never thought about it?
In a piece for The Athletic, Pierre LeBrun wonders if, when the Habs signed Texier (when they needed players because of injuries) in recent weeks, they had any intention of trading him at the deadline.

But even though the Habs will obviously be coming back healthier and with a surplus of forwards, trading Texier isn't really an option anymore. After all, he's become too important to trade, since he's not playing at all like he used to in St. Louis.
And at this price, it's worth keeping him.
Of course, if a club wants to trade him for a big piece, that's another matter. But the Canadiens don't intend to trade him just to get a pick in return, let's say.
We don't know if Texier will stay on the first line long term (probably not), but at $2.5 million, he offers good depth for a middle-6 on a good team.

– Interesting.
Much has been made of the players who left Canadian junior hockey to play in the United States.
Very little about the Americans who went the other way.
