Québécois media: It’s time for Marc Bergevin to stop acting like a baby

It's been over four years (November 2021) since Marc Bergevin left Montreal.

As you know, he went to work in Los Angeles, in the Kings organization. Then, recently, he took a job as right-hand man to Jarmo Kekalainen, the new boss in Buffalo.

Supposedly, his #1 plan was to have the GM job with the Kings in 2025, but Ken Holland finally got the job.

All this to say that it's been a while since Bergevin has spoken to the Quebec media, to whom he used to speak several times a year as GM of the Habs.

We've seen him give interviews here and there to major media outlets covering hockey since his dismissal, but that was mostly to promote his candidacy as a potential GM elsewhere in the NHL.

But then, Quebecor journalist Dave Lévesque mentioned that, on the heels of the Canadiens' visit to Buffalo, he had asked to speak to the Québécois leader.

This was refused because he was told that Bergevin would not be speaking to the media in order to take time to settle into his new position with the Sabres.

And the next evening, the reporter found out that Marc Bergevin had spoken to the media in Buffalo, before a practice with his new team.

Amazing…

“The man who was general manager of the Canadiens from 2012 until the end of November 2021 hasn't always had an easy relationship with Montreal journalists, but we naively thought that had faded with time.” – Dave Lévesque

Let's agree that it's a bit childish. After so many years, most people have moved on: Bergevin wouldn't be dragged through the mud unnecessarily if he gave the media some time.

People have questions about the end of his reign, and it's normal to be curious. Not talking doesn't give him a chance to tell his side of the story.

An interview about the Canadiens would have the effect of clearing up the question. Yes, it would talk about Bergevin for a little while in Quebec, but after that, the regular program would be back. And Bergevin would be back in the shadows.

Instead, every rejection creates a negative situation. And instead of potentially celebrating his work(because he's done some good things, including getting the Habs to the finals in 2021), he's being criticized.

So much water has flowed under the bridge (notably with the good work of Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton) that Bergevin's reign wouldn't be heavily criticized in 2026 if he decided to talk.

But instead, he makes the Sabres lie about his disposition with the media. Not good, chief.
