For the past few games, Alexandre Texier has been playing on the Canadiens' first line alongside Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield.

The Frenchman is fulfilling his role well so far. He's proven his worth to the Habs, and that helped him sign a two-year contract extension with the Canadiens earlier today.

But we all agree that, in the long term, the Texier option on the first line is probably not viable.

Darren Dreger has come to this conclusion: there is a need for the Canadiens on the first line. The Canadiens need to get their hands on a talented player who can round out the top-6 to help take the team to the next level.

But the tipster is also right in saying that there's no rush. He talked about it this morning on the radio(TSN 690):

Dreger is right, because Texier is filling that hole right now. Let's enjoy him while he's hot and while he's probably playing the best hockey of his career since his arrival in the National League… and while the kid line continues to dominate.

But where I really agree with Dreger is when he mentions that the Canadiens are equipped to go to war on a big trade… and that Kent Hughes has the luxury of waiting for the player he really wants.

Some clubs, after all, are going to start rebuilding. That's the case in Vancouver, and it looks like it's about to happen in Calgary too.

The Canadiens' GM can be patient to get what he wants on the market. I'm just saying, but if the Blues—remember, things are really bad in St. Louis—decide to start rebuilding and guys like Jordan Kyrou and Robert Thomas become available… it could completely change the game.

And even then, Kent Hughes will have the necessary pieces to make a big move if need be. We know that the Habs' bank of prospects is well-stocked, as is the bank of draft picks.

The Canadiens' GM is in a great position right now. And he could really make the most of it when the opportunity arises.
