Just over six months ago, Logan Mailloux was traded to the St. Louis Blues. The Habs had depth on defense following the arrival of Noah Dobson, and they took advantage of this to pick up Zachary Bolduc for the forward line.

And Bolduc, while not having a spectacular season, still has 10 goals and 17 points in 46 games.

That said, it's not so easy for Mailloux. The defenseman has just two points in 32 NHL games, and his defensive play is still a serious problem. Let's not forget that he even took a trip to the AHL earlier this season.

But in the last few minutes, we've learned that Mailloux has signed a contract extension with the Blues. We're talking about a one-year contract that will pay him $850,000.

$850,000 will be the minimum salary in the NHL next year.

This announcement may come as a surprise, given that this type of contract is not usually signed in January. That said, the possible explanation lies in the fact that the contract signed is a one-sided one.

This means that, regardless of whether Mailloux plays in the NHL or the AHL next year, his salary will be $850,000. That's a tempting guarantee for guys who know they could make it to the AHL.

That said, it's interesting that Mailloux agreed to sign at a time when his value is at an all-time low. An improvement in the second half of the season (not unusual for a young player) could have put him in a position to sign a better contract this summer.

A rather strange contract, then, but Mailloux is at least ensuring that he signs a contract that will pay him the same salary if he plays in the AHL next year. And one wonders if that's what's on his mind right now…
