The idea of Jakub Dobes being traded to the AHL is starting to gain ground.

He wasn't amazing in net last night against the Vancouver Canucks, and without saying that he had a bad night on the job, it's fair to say that his performance wasn't very encouraging.

But… could the Canadiens trade Fowler to the AHL at the same time?

Stéphane Leroux talked about it last night on L'Antichambre, and honestly, it's not that crazy. The idea would be to send Fowler and Dobes to Laval during the Olympic break (February 6 to 24), to allow them to play and get some playing time while the international competition takes place in Milan.

The Rocket could also take this opportunity to tell Kaapo Kahkonen to rest up a bit, as he's had a much heavier workload since Fowler was recalled by the Canadiens on December 9.

I really like Stéphane Leroux's idea.

When we look at the Rocket's schedule for the Olympic break, we see that the club will play eight games between February 6 and 24. There will be clashes against…

  • Cleveland Monsters (on the 6th and 7th)
  • Hershey Bears (13th)
  • Toronto Marlies (14th and 16th)
  • Rochester Americans (20th)
  • Utica Comets (on the 21st and 22nd)

There will be plenty of back-to-back games, as well as three games in three days between February 20 and 22. The Rocket could split these games up and give them to Fowler and Dobes so they can see some action, and maybe give the Habs a better idea of what to do next.

If Fowler continues to dominate down low and Dobes is average, the answer may become a little clearer. And the opposite is also true in a way…

All this to say that the goaltending situation will be one to watch in the coming weeks (we know that)… but there are options on the table for the Canadiens too.

And the one to send Fowler and Dobes down to play during the break makes sense when you think about it.

Overtime

– I agree.

– Of note:

– Good.

– It's about time.

– Wow.
