Jakub Dobes has his faults.

We're talking about a great goalie who takes up a lot of space in his net… but we're also talking about a goalie who often looks out of position. He doesn't have a square style like Carey Price or Jacob Fowler, and that sometimes gets him into trouble.

But on the other hand, Jakub Dobes has quality in his game, and it's not for nothing that he's won 13 times so far this season. It's no coincidence.

With the current goaltending situation in Montreal, one wonders what the Canadiens will do— especially in the context of Kent Hughes' comment that the ménage à trois shouldn't last forever.

Some want to see Dobes sent back to the AHL, while others would like to see the Habs take advantage of the situation to trade Dobes elsewhere… Because Fowler is solid and because Samuel Montembeault seems to have found his bearings again.

That said, Mathias Brunet mentioned last week that Dobes didn't have a “huge” value on the market. And this morning, without saying that the Czech is worth gold on the market, Renaud Lavoie mentioned on BPM Sports that to hear some say that Dobes has no value… is “completely false”:

It's interesting in a way.

Because in reality, Dobes does have a certain value on the market. He's 24 years old, he's the ideal size for a goalkeeper, he's developing well… and he's already proved he's capable of professional success.

His numbers since the start of the 2023-2024 season—in both the AHL and NHL—speak for themselves:

We agree: just because Dobes has value on the market doesn't mean the Canadiens are obliged to trade him.

The option of sending him to the AHL is on the table… and it's certainly on the minds of Montreal executives right now. Again, especially with Fowler and Monty's performance over the past two weeks.

But knowing that he has value can open certain doors too. I wonder if there's a world in which Dobes could be part of a package to get a top-6 forward who could help right now, me…

Overtime

– He's right.

– Sick!

– Of note.

– Good news for the Rams.
